Could a Plant Compound Work Protect Your Intervertebral Discs?
If you've ever struggled with disc-related back pain or neck pain, you know how important healthy spinal discs are to moving comfortably through your day. Now, encouraging new research is looking at a natural substance called quercetin — found in foods like apples, onions, and berries — and its potential to slow down disc degeneration at the cellular level.
WHAT IS QUERCETIN?
Quercetin is a botanical compound known as a flavonoid. It's already known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities, but two studies published in 2026 dove further into how it may specifically support the health of your spinal discs.
WHAT THE RESEARCH FOUND
The first study, published in Tissue & Cell, found that quercetin helps protect nucleus pulposus cells — the soft, gel-like cells at the center of each spinal disc that act as your body's natural buffers. (1) Researchers discovered that quercetin works by reducing a specific inflammation pathway and boosting a cellular "clean-up" process called mitochondrial autophagy. Put simply, this supports disc cells in removing worn-out components and operating more efficiently, which may help postpone the degeneration process.
The second study, published in the Naunyn-Schmiedeberg's Archives of Pharmacology, took a unique angle. (2) Using advanced genetic analysis, researchers pinpointed that fibrosis — a kind of tissue hardening — in nucleus pulposus cells plays a critical part in disc degeneration. They found that quercetin shows promise as an antifibrotic agent, meaning it may help hinder this scarring process from worsening.
WHY THIS MATTERS TO OUR PATIENTS
While more research is necessary before quercetin becomes a routine part of disc care, these findings contribute to a expanding body of evidence that nutrition and natural compounds can contribute a beneficial role alongside gentle, non-surgical spinal care like chiropractic treatment. At Apple Country Chiropractic, we believe in a whole-person approach to spinal health — blending hands-on chiropractic care with everyday life activities that support your body's innate healing.
