Williamson Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet
What do creaky, noisy, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Williamson knee pain sufferers experience that morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that is part of getting up and moving. Apple Country Chiropractic hears our Williamson chiropractic patients bemoan this all the time. Those Williamson knee pain sufferers would be pleased to get some relief. What’s one approach? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Apple Country Chiropractic wonders “How bad can eating be for Williamson knee pain relief?”
Williamson OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN
Williamson knee osteoarthritis is widespread. There are many Williamson knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the globe live with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Williamson knee osteoarthritis sufferer recognizes the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that reduces the quality of daily life. (1) It’s just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet could be some fun though!
WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET
The Mediterranean diet includes eating lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs as well as red wine and olive oil as the central source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Consuming a Mediterranean diet can be very tasty and adventurous for a recent Mediterranean diet adherent.
BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET
Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation as well as pain. A review of 3 research reports points out that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who stuck to a Mediterranean diet show a lessened risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who didn’t experience knee osteoarthritis at the start of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher faithfulness to a Mediterranean diet is affiliated with better quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
