Neck Pain Relief That Starts Beyond Your Neck
If you've dealt with neck pain for many months, you've likely tried stretching it, massaging it, and resting it. But here's a point that may come as a surprise: some of the most effective exercises for a achy neck focus on its surrounding regions instead. Your neck functions as part of a system that includes your jaw above and your upper back below, and two fresh studies published in 2026 show why that cooperation matters.
YOUR JAW HAS A SAY
Researchers tracked 62 adults who had lived with neck pain for more than three months. (1) Every participant performed neck stabilization exercises for six weeks, and half also added Rocabado exercises, a brief series of low-intensity movements for the jaw, tongue, and head posture. Both groups got better. The group that added jaw exercises, however, saw bigger gains in how much pressure their neck could handle before it started to hurt, in their ability to sense their head position, and in their balance. Because the jaw and neck share muscles and nerve pathways, it makes sense that helping one can support the other.
DON'T OVERLOOK YOUR UPPER BACK
A separate study of 54 adults introduced thoracic (mid- and upper-back) mobility exercises to typical neck exercises. (2) The added routine didn't ease pain more than neck exercises alone, but it did lead to better posture, spinal mobility, neck-related function, and use of the arms and shoulders. A tight upper back may leave your neck carrying an extra load, so freeing up it may help everything above work more smoothly.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
These were small, brief studies, and in each case, the extra exercises were layered onto neck exercises rather than substituting for them. Nonetheless, they're a useful reminder that the origin of your symptoms and the route to feeling better aren't always in the same place.
