Guidelines for back pain care
recommend non-surgical care treatments
like spinal manipulation. So who delivers non-surgical care? A recent
study just stated that “Chiropractic is one of the
largest manual therapy professions in the US and internationally.” (1) So
true! Chiropractors like your Williamson chiropractor at Apple Country Chiropractic
relish that responsibility. Your Williamson
chiropractor helps Williamson back pain and neck pain
patients be alleviated of the pain and enhance
their quality of life.
New Back Pain Care Guidelines
The newest guideline for non-surgical treatment
of patients whose back pain and/or leg
pain just started advocates patient education (incorporating
a talk about treatment outcome), exercise (advice
to keep active) and manual therapy, not routine imaging, targeted treatment,
extraforaminal glucocorticoid injection, paracetamol, NSAIDs and opioids. (2) Chiropractic
offers all three!
Who Sees a Chiropractor?
24% of US adults seek out chiropractic
care in their lifetime. 8.4% of US adults received
chiropractic care in the past year. (1) Why don’t more patients seek
chiropractic care? The back pain care guidelines written by
groups like the American College of Physicians and the American Pain Society call
for non-surgical approaches like spinal manipulation. (3) Even
the physical therapists are upset! “Although therapies
delivered by PTs are promoted as a first-line treatment for low back pain, PT
referral rates remain low.” Only 10.1% of primary care provider visits for low
back pain ended with a physical therapy referral. If a patient
were insured by Medicaid or Medicare, that percent was even lower. Where
do these patients with low back pain and leg pain go? What do they do about their low back pain and leg pain sciatica?
They received opioid prescriptions more often. (4) Your Williamson chiropractor offers
a non-surgical, non-drug way to pain relief.
Why Patients See a Chiropractor
But what inspires a visit to a
chiropractor like your Williamson chiropractor? Spine pain. 63% for
back pain and 30.2% for neck pain. (That sounds right for Apple Country Chiropractic,
too. Our Williamson chiropractic patients see us as the Williamson
back and neck pain specialists!) Further,
adults over 30 and those with spine pain were more prone to consult a chiropractor in the last year. 23%
of the chiropractic patients also had a prescription for their
back pain. 35% of them used over the counter medications for
the issue which they were seeing the chiropractor. 63.8% thought the combined care for their
spinal pain – medical and chiropractic – was helpful. (1) Your
