Apple Country Chiropractic Explains the Normal Thoracic Spine

Thoracic spine pain originates in the mid-back between the cervical (neck) and lumbar (low back) spinal areas. The normal thoracic spine has a convex curve. Its 12 vertebrae attach to the ribs via articulations that assist in breathing and motion.

There are various causes of mid back pain including disc degeneration, facet joint arthritis, scoliosis, disc herniation, fractures, and rib subluxations.

Ribs that surround and protect the chest organs connect to the sternum (chest bone) with cartilage. The ribs articulate or move with the thoracic vertebrae at the spine. The articulation of the rib to the thoracic vertebrae can be a source sharp, stabbing, or burning back pain.
