Williamson Exercise for Back Pain Relief: Whats Best? Good Question!

An age-old chiropractic patient question: ”Just tell me what exercise to do to get rid of this back pain, and I’ll do it!”

We all want the one “correct” answer to make things better. We prefer to “just do it” and be finished. Knowing just what the right thing is is the conundrum even for researchers and for your Williamson chiropractor. The key for all involved – researcher, doctor, patient – is understanding the patient. Apple Country Chiropractic gets to know each of our back pain patients to know better which exercise(s) might make the most difference. Our chiropractic services are here to help.

WHAT TO DO?

Researchers struggle to know what the right back pain relieving exercise(s) is, also. A group of them reviewed 118 back pain exercise trials with 9710 volunteers. They revealed that the most effective exercise types for relieving pain were mind-body, core-based exercise, and Pilates. They found that the most effective means to reduce disability were Pilates, core-based, and strength exercises. According to a unique scoring system know as SUCRA which assesses the rates the probability of an approach’s being effective found that Pilates ranked highest with 93% for likeliness of reducing pain and 98% for reducing disability. (1) Apple Country Chiropractic will agree that those are extraordinary effectiveness scores!

BUT WHAT ABOUT…?

Other studies focuse on the effectiveness of other exercises, too. An analysis of 89 studies/5578 patients dedicated to determining the effectiveness of exercise for non-specific chronic low back pain reported that Pilates had the highest probability of decreasing pain, resistance training and stabilization/motor control exercise for enhancing physical function, and resistance and aerobic training for improving mental health. (2) Pilates won again! Then, in a 414 chronic low back pain patient study, core stability exercise reduced pain more and improved function better than general exercise. (3) And for back pain sufferers with a lumbar disc herniation, stretch and strength-based yoga showed itself to be a possible option to enhance related neuropathic pain, disability, and function in these patients by increasing mobilization, core muscle strength, and hamstring flexibility. (4) Apple Country Chiropractic doesn’t want to confuse you or lead you astray! We will just urge you to attempt a few of our recommendations and see how good they make you feel.
